“A FLAMBOYANT WEDDING” IN THE DRC: MEET THE DESIGNERS

To inspire you in creating this season’s most beautiful designs, Vlisco has decided to work in partnership with local, world-renowned fashion designers, that we would like to introduce to you.

MS FIFI BASHALA
Fifi Bashala discovered her love for sewing in the 80s. During the school holidays, she spent her time helping her mother who was a seamstress by trade. She first worked with Vlisco during an event in 2012, when her huge talent was uncovered. Today, Fifi Bashala, or Bitshilux as we like to call her, belongs to this group of fashion designers in partnership with Vlisco.

MS MARIE JOSÉ BILONDA
A nurse by training, it was her passion which drove her to enter the sewing world after getting married; since, as a teenager, her parents were opposed to her plan, thinking she would not earn enough money. Therefore, her workshop was established in 2010. Her favourite product is the Super-Wax, which best expresses the values of the Congolese woman, fond of elegance and finesse. A Vlisco partner since 2015, she specialises in cocktail party outfits and work attire for women, as well as shirts and jackets for men.

MS FANNY MANDINA
A fashion designer and stylist, she has had to put her scientific career aside to focus on sewing, which she has pursued for over 10 years. She managed to establish herself in the public domain by creating her brand, Fanny Design, in 2003. She first worked with Vlisco in 2009. And she loves to work with fabrics for evening outfits. She finds that Vlisco fabric fits the shape of African women very well.

MME SÉRAPHINE NYENYEZI
Ms Séraphine’s mother began 33 years ago with her ‘Séra Perfection’ workshop. She is fond of the fabric’s material, colour and texture. As we understand it, her mother sold Vlisco fabric more than 50 years ago. In each Vlisco collection, she admires the attention to detail in the choice of patterns, and her favourite fabric is Java. Da Séra, as she is affectionately called, specialises in evening attire and gala event outfits; her workshop is one of the biggest and most famous in Kinshasa and across the DRC.

MS VÉRONIQUE LUMANU
A huge fashion enthusiast, Ms Véronique Lumanu opened her sewing workshop in 2014. She loves to create embroidered dresses; she has taken inspiration from West Africa and adapted it to suit the trends and demands of Congolese fashion. Early on, her talent brought her to Vlisco, and the partnership began in 2015. Today, her workshop has reached industrial proportions, and her Vlisco outfits, with their perfectly crafted and embroidered patterns, make her stand out.
